    Why here

(EN) Cap d'Ail is a French commune wedged between the Monegasque border and the cliffs of the Tête de Chien, whose marina has long worked as a relay for the Principality's ports; our partner skippers know the sea route into Monaco, the road-free Mala cove and the local seasonal pressure first-hand.

    01

Departing Cap d'Ail for Monaco without the Basse Corniche

Cap d'Ail sits directly against the Monegasque border, yet the road in means the Basse Corniche, the Fontvieille tunnels and border traffic that seizes up on Grand Prix week, Yacht Show week and every August evening. Leaving from the quays of Port de Cap d'Ail, the same hop is a straight line across the bay of Fontvieille: a car transfer that can stretch to half an hour becomes a few minutes of open water. Every route on this page starts here, in Cap d'Ail.

    02

The Mala cove has no road

Plage de la Mala, Cap d'Ail's most photographed cove, is walled in by cliffs: on land you reach it only by the coastal path or the long staircase down past the Eden residence — with luggage, heels or small children, that is not a transfer. Arriving from the water is the natural way in, and the same applies to the beach clubs tucked into the rocks there.

    03

A working relay port for the Principality

Because Monegasque berths are scarce and expensive, Port de Cap d'Ail has long served as a logistical relay for yachts working around Monaco. Crews, guests and owners shuttle constantly between a boat lying at Cap d'Ail and an appointment in Monaco, Beaulieu or Cap-Ferrat — exactly the outbound movement a private water taxi based here is built for.

    FAQ

    Useful to know.

In the standard case, on the visitor quays of Port de Cap d'Ail, the marina sitting right on the Monegasque border below the Riviera Marriott. Your skipper sends the precise pontoon and a map pin the day before, and meets you on the quay to take luggage aboard. If you are staying at the Marriott you walk out to the boat; from anywhere else in the commune the marina is a short drive, and the coastal path from Plage Marquet leads to it on foot.

For the Monaco hop, the sea is not so much faster in raw minutes as it is predictable. The crossing to Port Hercule or Fontvieille takes around ten minutes whatever the day. By road you depend on the Basse Corniche, the Fontvieille tunnels and the border approach, which can be fluid in the morning and gridlocked in the evening — and totally saturated during Grand Prix and Yacht Show week. Further along the coast, towards Beaulieu, Cap-Ferrat or Villefranche, the sea wins outright because the road has to climb around the headlands.

Yes, and it is one of the main reasons people book from Cap d'Ail. The Mala cove has no road access at all — only the coastal path and the staircase past the Eden residence. We approach from the water and land guests according to conditions and to what the beach club allows on the day. Tell us the club and the time of your booking and the skipper will arrange the arrival with them.

From Port de Cap d'Ail we run westward along the coast: Monaco (Port Hercule or Fontvieille), Èze-sur-Mer, Beaulieu-sur-Mer, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat and Villefranche-sur-Mer. Prices are per boat, not per person, so a family or a group shares one fare: from 190 € for the short Monaco crossing, from 240 € towards Èze-sur-Mer, from 290 € to Beaulieu, from 330 € to Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat and from 370 € to Villefranche. These are starting prices; the final quote depends on the date, the time of day, the size of boat needed and whether you want a one-way transfer or a wait-and-return.

Our Cap d'Ail transfers run on private closed-cabin boats taking up to around ten guests, luggage included. Because the fare is per boat, a couple, a family or a group of colleagues all pay the same for the crossing. Tell us the number of passengers and the amount of luggage when you enquire and we allocate the right boat.

Port de Cap d'Ail is well sheltered and the dominant breeze here is from the east-southeast, but a swell setting in from the west or southwest makes this coast lively. Your skipper checks the forecast on the morning of the transfer. If conditions do not allow a comfortable crossing, we propose a different time slot, a different landing point or a cancellation without charge — we never sail a family across a bad sea to protect a booking.

From late May to early September, and especially around the Monaco Grand Prix in May and the Monaco Yacht Show in late September, boats around Cap d'Ail are booked out days in advance because the whole Principality overflows into the neighbouring ports. In those windows, book as early as you can. From November to March demand drops sharply and same-day requests are usually feasible, weather permitting.
