Great Exuma has one main highway, but the northern cays — Staniel Cay, Big Major Cay with its swimming pigs, Compass Cay, Norman's Cay and the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park — have no bridge or car access from George Town at all. A private boat is the only direct way in, and the only way to reach them and still sleep in your own bed on Great Exuma the same night.
Heading north you cross from the shallow, turquoise Exuma Bank into the deep-blue swell of Exuma Sound. The Bank is dotted with sandbars, coral heads and cuts that shift with the tide — a route a local captain reads rather than guesses, unlike a rental skiff following a chartplotter.
Sandals Emerald Bay and Grand Isle Resort & Residences sit on their own deep-water marina at Emerald Bay, about fourteen miles up-island from George Town. A private water taxi collects guests slip-side, no resort shuttle or taxi queue at Exuma International Airport required.
