    Why here

The oyster-port gateway to Arcachon Bay

    01

From Larros, skip the drive around the lagoon

From Larros, reaching Le Piquey or the Cap Ferret shore by car means looping around the entire bay through summer traffic — easily over an hour on busy days. By boat from Gujan-Mestras it is a direct crossing of roughly half an hour, with the oyster beds and the Île aux Oiseaux gliding past instead of a queue of cars.

    02

Places a car simply cannot reach

The signature sights of Arcachon Bay — the cabanes tchanquées on stilts off the Île aux Oiseaux, the sandbanks facing the Dune du Pilat, the oyster parks off the Gujan channels — are only truly seen from the water. A private boat departing Larros puts you among them within minutes of casting off.

    03

Depart from a working oyster port

Larros is no marina pastiche: it is the heart of France's oyster-farming capital, with its wooden cabins, tasting shacks and the Maison de l'Huître on the quay. Your skipper reads the buoyed channels and the tide the way locals do — the crossing itself becomes part of the experience.

    FAQ

    Useful to know.

The standard meeting point is the quay of Port de Larros, next to the Maison de l'Huître — easy to find, with parking nearby. Pick-up from Port de La Hume or Port de Meyran can be arranged on request, subject to the tide.

Arcachon Bay is a tidal lagoon: at low tide vast sandbanks and mudflats uncover, and the small channels serving the oyster ports carry little water. Your skipper schedules the departure within the tidal window so boarding at Larros is smooth. When confirming your booking we propose times that match the tide of the day.

For anything on the far side of the bay, yes by a wide margin. Larros to the Cap Ferret peninsula (Le Piquey) is a direct crossing of about half an hour, versus a full loop around the lagoon by road that can exceed an hour in summer. Arcachon itself is about twenty minutes across the water.

Prices are indicative 'from' rates for the whole boat, not per person — for example from €150 to Arcachon or from €140 to the Île aux Oiseaux. Up to about 10 passengers travel together, so the per-guest cost drops quickly for groups. A firm quote is confirmed before booking.

The bay is far more sheltered than the open Atlantic, and our boats have enclosed, heated cabins, so light rain or a fresh breeze rarely stops a crossing. If the skipper judges conditions unsafe — strong wind over the lagoon, poor visibility — we reschedule within the next tidal windows or refund the transfer in full.
