    Why here

Oyster-village jetties, private crossings of the Bassin d'Arcachon

    01

One road in, one road out

The Cap Ferret peninsula hangs off a single road axis, and in July–August traffic between Lège and the villages can crawl for an hour. From the jetée du Canon, Bélisaire — the Cap Ferret landing stage — is a quarter of an hour by water and Arcachon about twenty-five minutes — no car, no parking hunt in the narrow oyster-village lanes.

    02

    Arcachon is opposite, not adjacent

From L'Herbe you can see the Arcachon and Le Moulleau waterfront across the Bassin, yet driving there means looping the entire lagoon via Biganos. A private boat turns that detour into a short crossing — the only sensible way to do dinner in Arcachon from a cabin village and be back the same evening, with the Île aux Oiseaux and its cabanes tchanquées on the way.

    03

A lagoon that demands local knowledge

The Bassin empties and refills with the tide: channels wander, sandbanks move, and currents strengthen on big coefficients. Our partner skippers time departures with the tide and use the deep-water jetties at Le Canon and L'Herbe, so you board when you planned to — not when the water allows a stranger to.

    FAQ

    Useful to know.

At the public village piers: the jetée du Canon near rue Sainte-Catherine, or the smaller jetée de l'Herbe just below the Chapelle algérienne. Your skipper confirms the exact pier and time the day before, depending on the tide and where you are staying — both villages are compact enough that either pier is a short walk from any cabin or villa.

Dramatically faster in season. Arcachon sits directly across the Bassin — about 25 minutes by fast boat — but by road you must loop the whole lagoon via Biganos, which regularly takes well over an hour in summer, before even looking for parking. Bélisaire (Cap Ferret) is about 15 minutes by water instead of a slow drive down the crowded peninsula road.

Indicative prices start around €80–90 for short hops (Le Piquey, Île aux Oiseaux) and from about €150 for a full crossing to Arcachon or Le Moulleau — for the whole boat, not per person, with your group travelling together in an enclosed cabin. Exact quotes depend on date, time and tide; evening and peak-August slots book out first.

They can. The Bassin d'Arcachon is a tidal lagoon: channels shift and some shorelines dry out at low water. The jetée du Canon is workable through the tide cycle, which is one reason we favour it, but your skipper may adjust the departure by a little or suggest the neighbouring pier on very low tides. You are told at booking — never on the pontoon.

The Bassin is sheltered compared with the open Atlantic, so crossings run most of the year in an enclosed-cabin boat. In strong westerly blows or thick winter weather the skipper may reroute via calmer channels, shift the time, or refund if the trip genuinely cannot run. November to March, service is on request rather than daily.
