Porto Cervo was built from scratch by the Aga Khan in the 1960s as a sailing village on the northeast coast of Sardinia. The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) is the centre of Mediterranean racing, hosting the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup (September) and the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta (June). The iconic hotels — Cala di Volpe, Romazzino, Pitrizza — sit in private bays designed to be reached by sea.
The Hotel Cala di Volpe sits in a private bay with no public road access to the beach. Same for Romazzino and Pitrizza — the three iconic Costa Smeralda hotels are designed to be reached by boat. A water taxi from Porto Cervo takes 10 minutes.
The public ferry from Palau to La Maddalena runs every 30 minutes but queues for an hour in August. From Porto Cervo, our water taxi crosses in 40 minutes, direct to the town quay, with a stop at Budelli's pink sand beach if you want.
The Strait of Bonifacio is 11 km wide. Porto Cervo to the medieval citadel perched on white limestone cliffs takes 1h15 by water taxi. Faster than the Palau-Santa Teresa-Bonifacio ferry chain and infinitely more scenic.
