    Why here

The island with no airport — everything arrives by sea, through La Savina.

    01

There is no road to Formentera

You cannot drive here. The island is reached only by sea, and the scheduled fast ferries between Ibiza and La Savina run to fixed timetables that end well before an evening flight lands or a late dinner in Ibiza town finishes. A private boat is not a luxury alternative to the road — on Formentera it is the road, simply on your own clock.

    02

The car quota makes wheels a liability

Through the summer season the formentera.eco scheme caps how many visitor vehicles may enter the island each day, with a paid permit required before you even book a ferry slot, and categories such as quad bikes, caravans and off-island rental cars restricted. The exact dates and daily cap are set by the current year's decree, so they shift from season to season. Arriving by private boat sidesteps the whole permit chase: you land at La Savina with your luggage and a transfer waiting.

    03

Luggage, timing and the last ferry

Formentera's peak-season ferry queues at La Savina and Ibiza are a real bottleneck with cases, boards and a family in tow. A private closed-cabin boat takes your group and bags directly, holds for a delayed flight into Ibiza, and will run the crossing after the last public departure — the difference between sleeping on Formentera tonight and sleeping in Ibiza.

    FAQ

    Useful to know.

At Port de la Savina, the island's only harbour, on the northern shore. In practice that means either the Marina La Savina side on the western dock or the Port Formentera pontoons — your skipper confirms the exact berth the day before, because summer traffic at La Savina shifts which pontoon is workable. No hotel on Formentera has its own private quay, so if you are staying at Es Pujols, Migjorn or La Mola we meet you at La Savina and coordinate the short land transfer to your door.

The crossing itself is comparable — Ibiza town to La Savina is a short hop of roughly ten nautical miles, around half an hour either way. The time you actually gain is everything around it: no ticket queue, no waiting for the next scheduled departure, no luggage line, and no last-ferry cut-off. The gain is largest for late arrivals into Ibiza airport and for groups travelling with a lot of baggage.

Not from the runway — Ibiza airport has no boat access. We pick up on the coast nearest the airport, on the Es Codolar and Playa d'en Bossa side, or at Marina Botafoch in Ibiza town, with a short taxi link from the terminal. We track your flight, so a delayed landing does not cost you the boat. If you are planning the journey the other way round, starting from Ibiza, our Ibiza page covers departures from that side.

Our closed-cabin boats take up to 10 guests plus luggage, and prices are per boat rather than per person, shown from an indicative starting point: the short Formentera–Ibiza hop starts around 390 €, while a long open-sea leg to Palma de Mallorca is a different order of magnitude. The quote includes the boat, the licensed skipper, fuel for the stated route and port fees at departure. Waiting time beyond the agreed window, third-party marina charges on arrival — notably at Sant Antoni — and beach-club tender work are quoted separately.

The channel between Ibiza and Formentera — Es Freus — is short but exposed, and a firm summer sea breeze or a spell of tramuntana builds a steep, uncomfortable chop there quickly. Our skippers read the forecast the evening before and again at dawn. If conditions are not right for a closed-cabin transfer we shift the departure by a few hours or move it to the next window, and a cancellation on safety grounds is not charged.

Yes, and it is one of the best reasons to take a private boat here. Both sit inside the Ses Salines Natural Park, where anchoring is regulated to protect the Posidonia meadows: in the controlled zones you either take a reserved buoy or anchor on clean sand only, never on the seagrass. Buoy reservations must be made in advance through the official Balearic system, so tell us at booking if you want a swim stop rather than on the day.

The whole northern zone of Formentera, La Savina included, sits inside the Ses Salines Natural Park, and the park's rules — not port convenience — decide what a boat may do. In practice: anchoring on Posidonia seagrass is prohibited and heavily fined across the Pitiusas; regulated areas work on reservable mooring buoys booked in advance through the official Balearic system, and the buoy service operates seasonally; some sectors are restricted or off-limits to landing altogether; and tender landings on park beaches such as Ses Illetes follow the same regime. None of this stops a transfer — La Savina remains an ordinary commercial pick-up — but it does shape swim stops and anchorage requests, which is why we ask about them at booking rather than on the pontoon.
