Saint-Martin / Sint Maarten is the smallest island in the world shared between two nations — France (north) and the Netherlands (south). Grand Case on the French side is known as the Gourmet Capital of the Caribbean. The island is the main gateway to Saint-Barth (no direct long-haul flights) and Anguilla (ferry often cancelled in swell).
The public ferry from Marigot to Gustavia is cancelled whenever the swell exceeds 2 metres — which happens regularly in winter. A private water taxi has more flexibility on route and timing, and crosses in 45 minutes regardless. The only reliable way to keep your Saint-Barth dinner reservation.
Marigot to Philipsburg by road takes 25-40 minutes through Simpson Bay traffic. By water taxi around the south coast: 25 minutes, open Caribbean views, no red lights. From Philipsburg, Anguilla is a 20-minute hop across the strait.
Tintamarre (Flat Island) is uninhabited, with white sand, nesting sea turtles and an abandoned airstrip. 30 minutes from Anse Marcel by water taxi. No ferry goes there. It is as close to a private island experience as the Caribbean offers without owning one.
