Porto Cervo looks close to Olbia on a map — about 25 NM by sea — but the drive threads the coast road and the Arzachena junctions, and in August that stretch clogs with rental cars, service vans and coaches heading for the same handful of resorts. Leaving from Olbia by sea you clear the gulf, round Capo Figari and arrive at the Costa Smeralda pontoons on your own schedule. This page covers departures from Olbia; if you are planning the reverse leg, see our Porto Cervo page.
From Olbia, Bonifacio is roughly 50 NM and Porto-Vecchio roughly 65 NM, on the far side of the Bocche di Bonifacio — a short hop for a fast boat, but an absurd journey by land and ferry, since you would have to drive north to Santa Teresa Gallura, wait for a scheduled crossing and then drive again. A private transfer departing Olbia turns a lost day into a morning. Destination details, harbours and local rules are on our Bonifacio and Porto-Vecchio pages.
La Maddalena, Caprera, Spargi and Budelli simply cannot be reached by car from Olbia except through the Palau ferry, on its own timetable. A private boat leaves when your flight lands and lets you choose the anchorage rather than the sailing time — and the same logic applies to the Tavolara–Punta Coda Cavallo marine park, right at Olbia's doorstep.
